Set II: Hey Pockey Way continues the outstanding song selection for the evening, and Brent's working hard to get you off your ass and shake that thang. The jam on this Bird Song is definitely unique, although it rides that fine line between disjointed and "out there." Masterpiece>Bird Song>Promised Land is one of my favorite first set song blocks. Roses is just rare enough to be special (I seem to recall never hearing it more than once a tour) and this is a beautiful version, even with Healey's vocal effects. The music: Set I: A decent Aiko is always a good way to start an evening. But this night brought to a close our first run of Alpine shows and was special for me in a few different ways. In reality, they were just pissed because we skipped half our finals to go to these Alpine shows, but our grades were still good enough to graduate (that really ticked them off). The school didn't want to let us participate in the graduation ceremony, ostensibly because we hadn't attended the rehearsal. I used to have a funny picture of Frank with his head back against the passenger seat of the bus, asleep, and a really beautiful sunrise in the background. After the show, Frank and I split ASAP and drove all night to get back for our high school graduation. The scene: the dust bowl coming to a close. 4 stars for the show, but only 3 b/c this recording isn't too great (but still my thanks for uploading it for us all to enjoy). One interesting note - Bobby loses his place rhythmically several times during this show, either falling one beat ahead or behind the song (Masterpiece, Bird Song, Women R, etc.), which cracks me up. Aside from that, the song selection is really fantastic and the playing is mostly solid and at times great. It definitely takes away from the peformance, but it's not horrible and you get used to it, plus its not as prominent in the second set. Healey was apparently adding a stupid flange effects the vocals (and instruments at times), but if you listen to this audience recording it actually kind of fits with the acoustics created by that huge Alpine roof (on the SBD of this show, the flange is more pronounced). Overall: A much more solid night than the night before.
